Curriculum in focus- Mathematics

"In mathematics the art of proposing a question must be held of higher value than solving it"

Intent

The aim of our maths curriculum is for children from Nursery to Year 2 to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics. They will be able to apply the necessary skills to reason and solve a variety of problems. The focus is to develop a love of maths and positive attitudes to the subject by recognising that mistakes are part of the learning process.

Implementation

We implement our maths curriculum through the use of a variety of teaching and learning styles. We follow a mastery approach that is closely linked to the White Rose Hub planning. The curriculum is divided into blocks of learning focused around different areas of maths and allows children to spend sufficient time on a concept to fully understand it and apply their knowledge The blocks of learning, and individual lessons ensure children have the prior knowledge required for new learning. Lessons include elements of fluency, reasoning and problem solving so children have a deep understanding of concepts within the lesson. During our lessons, models and images are used support learning in each area enabling the children to progress from concrete to pictorial to abstract. Assessment is used regularly to ensure that children are secure in their mathematical learning and to identify any gaps before moving forward.

Impact

Our children make good progress as they journey from Nursery to Year 2. Children leave our school with a positive attitude to maths and a willingness to have a go. Our children have the fundamental skills to prepare them for the next stage of their mathematics education.
